When Sam auditioned for the role of Tom Nash three years ago, he didnt expect to be back playing Kane Phillips. The audition was a quick process where I acted out only one scene one of the dance party scenes, Sam explains. Shortly after that he was happy to hear he landed a part on Home and Away.
Sam gave us some insight behind his character. Kanes had a pretty hard life. Hes a bit mixed up. He doesnt know how to express himself apart from using violence and anger. Hes quite an insecure young bloke, so he covers all that up by being tough.
Being a nice guy himself, its understandable that playing the role of a stalker takes a bit of getting used to. It got a bit upsetting at times, having to be mean all the time and having people look at me like thats what I was really like.
Laughing, Sam told us that sometimes the other actors would joke around, treating him like Kane in real life.
As well as working with the directors, Sam was given creative freedom when it came to his own input to his character. Every director has his or her own take on the character, but they were flexible. It was great, the way we talked about it a lot, says Sam. The producer wanted to make sure we saw the underlying aspects of Kane as well as the mean stuff.
So in making Kane real, Sam tried to make him have him a reason for being such a meanie. Hes an obsessive person because hes so insecure. I think that would have been threatening for Shauna.
But he agrees that she did all she could in her situation. It would have been pretty scary for a teacher but I think she reacted the right way.
Even though he was playing intense scenes Sam had a lot of fun on the set. It was great! Everyone was really good to work with. All the actors work really hard and the crew were great. And all the directors were great as well. I had a really good time.
Sam says he would love to do it again even though It was hard getting up early in the mornings sometimes!
Before his role on Home and Away Sam appeared on All Saints as a character called Doug. He studied three years at acting school in Queensland, where he did a lot of theatre. Hes also had roles in the independent films City Loop and Jet Set, shot in Queensland.
Hes currently writing a couple of plays, and hopes to direct his own work someday.
Is Sam going to stick around in Summer Bay?
Sam revealed that hell be on screen for a couple of months Shaunas not the only one to be stalked. Well have to wait and see whos next!
Kane & Kirsty Storyline
Kirsty & Kane run away together. They get new jobs and find a place to live. One day when Kane is out the place where they're living gets broken in to. Kirsty is scared and phone's home. Kane tells Kirsty he's taking her somewhere better. They get in the car and Kirsty falls asleep. Kane drops Kirsty off at home telling her she can do so much better than him. Kane drives away with tears in his eyes and Kirsty is left crying. Then she gets a letter, but who's it from? and what does it say???
